Yoga Under the Oaks

Last week, I was counting my blessings while laying under the oak trees at Charles Towne Landing. It's a pretty peaceful setting. Tucked in the back of a beautiful historic state park, Yoga Under the Oaks happens a few times each spring and fall. Each session is followed by a happy hour at the Legare-Waring House. Practicing yoga never felt so good.

Charles Towne Landing is located at the exact spot where Charleston's first settlers landed on the Ashley River. It's hard not to be taken back a bit by the history that surrounds you when you are on the centuries-old site.

The total cost of the class is $10 and admission to Charles Towne Landing is waived for those participating in the class. After the class is over, nosh on a few bites from Coastal Craft & Cru Food Truck. The light happy hour included a Mediterranean Salad and a cool glass of Pinto Gris served from the side of a 1956 Ford F600 truck.

The birds were chirping throughout the trees during our session. The scenery was inspiring. I left feeling relaxed and energized at the same time. The next class is July 8, but check here for more upcoming dates.

Island Hopping

This week has been pretty crazy and the recent events around the country have been a reminder to seek out more quiet moments. In celebration of Mitch's birthday, I took yesterday off and we went to Edisto to do some fishing and island hopping. We headed down early and spent more than 6 hours on the river before seeing another boat. With life being so busy, the quiet of a river can really recharge your batteries. I can't think of a better way to spend a Wednesday.

After we caught a few fish, we tied up to an island and went exploring. Mitch was checking out a dilapidated old dock, while I found pieces of broken pottery and animal tracks in the pluff mud.

We found a clearing in the woods and a big oak tree. I came across an old glass bottle marked "No Deposit, No Return, Not to be Refilled". I did a little research on the bottle and it appears to be around 50 years old. It really makes me wish there was a message in this bottle! Edisto is always a "reset-button" for me and I am certainly grateful for the mid-week adventure.

The Angel Oak

If trees could talk, this old lady would have a lot to say. The Angel Oak is located on Johns Island, SC in a quiet wooded area. The Angel Oak has a shade of over 17,000 square feet and is predicted to be over 1500 years old.  The tree is said to be the largest living thing east of the Mississippi. Growing up in South Carolina, you see a lot of gorgeous oak trees. I have never seen a tree so big. The Angel Oak is truly breath taking.

Can you imagine all the things this tree has weathered? I have heard people say that you should travel to the Grand Canyon, look down and see how insignificant you really are. Well, travel no further than the Carolina lowcountry and stand under a tree that has been around for every hurricane in the past 1500 years. That's a pretty long ride. Take a trip out in the water and drive your boat so far into the ocean that  you can't see land anymore. Sit over the gulfstream and think about all the animals swimming around beneath your boat. It's comforting to know that we cant change the world.
