Bourbon Milk Punch

I got married in April and did a makeup trial at Palmetto Bluff a couple weeks before my wedding. Besides the incredible make up artist, the best part was the little drink they gave me to sip on. The Bourbon Milk Punch was divine! It's one of those drinks that is so nice to sip but you don't want to have more than a couple. This week Palmetto Bluff was kind enough to share the recipe on their facebook page. You should give it a try as the weather gets cooler.

Bourbon Milk Punch

½ oz. Makers Mark Bourbon
1 oz Half & Half
1 oz Heavy Cream
a splash Vanilla Extract
 1 ½ oz Simple Syrup
and a pinch of nutmeg and cinnamon

Shake well, strain into a snifter 1/2 filled with ice, and garnish with nutmeg.

I have a hard time drinking bourbon when it's warm out. Do you switch to a different drink when the weather changes?

Liquor Pops

What do you mean August is over?! I still haven't made popsicles. A friend made the most amazing popsicles that consisted of watermelon, champagne, vodka and mint. Yum! I saw her a week later and she had fresh batch made with peaches. I've been meaning to make them all summer! Somehow I find time to blog, but can't find time to freeze fruit and liquor. Seriously, check out the Bloody Mary popsicles. You could add alcohol to any of these and have an instant party. Sounds like a project for this weekend. Do you have any Labor Day weekend projects?

Buffalos at Palmetto Bluff

May River Bloody Mary

If you know me, you know I am love with anything that mentions the May River.
Besides the fantastic name, this drink features Firefly vodka and pickled okra. Yum!

White Peach Sangria

Dry Reisling, Couintreau, and White Peaches. Mom loved it.

Sweet Potato Fries with Maple Aioli.

By the time our lunch came I was done taking photos. I had the Turkey and Brie Panini and she had the Brisket Club. With a view of the water we were in heaven. They overheard our conversation and sent us off with a birthday treat.

We spent the rest of the afternoon walking around Palmetto Bluff. At 85 degrees it was decidedly cool for August.
The scenery is gorgeous. Next time I'll bring back more photos.

Spirits of the Lowcountry

Last night I went to Muse, one of my favorite wine bars in downtown Charleston. Of course I went for a glass of wine but the nice folks next to us recommended the concoction pictured above. This cocktail featured cayenne vodka, creme de cacao, and lots of basil. Spicy chocolate? Yes please!

We talked to the bartender about the current trend in "mixology" in Charleston. I won't disagree, in the past month I have tried the Blackberry Imperial Fizz at The Gin Joint and the Monkey Gland at the Husk. Who knew gin could taste so good?

What are your thought on fancy cocktails? Do you like to try something new, or do you stick with a trusty glass of wine?

Old Bluffton

Coburn's Liquor Store, circa 1939 is the oldest liquor store in the state of South Carolina. On the heels of the national repeal of prohibition moonshiners and folks from Hilton Head would come to Coburn's to buy liquor for the weekend. Janie Coburn said the red dot used to stand for hours of operation - sun up to sun down. J.F. and Janie Coburn kept a pistol under the counter because people would wake them up to buy a bottle of liquor and you never knew who would show up.

Murray Sease of Shine on Art painted the quaint liquor store and when I saw it in the Society of Bluffton Artists  gallery I knew couldn't live without it. After my mom and I bought the painting, we went for a glass of champagne at Vineyard 55. Dad drove up on his new Harley and we talked about our dear friend Graham Bullock. Graham passed his motorcycle on to my dad and wrote of this liquor store in his old newspaper the Bluffton Eccentric. He reminds us to cherish the days we have with one another as well as the heirloom establishments we have in our town. Our part of the world is a rapidly changing one, sometimes we need to sit back with a glass of wine and appreciate our surroundings.
